While a high price tag and a lack of governmental support let the technology crawl along at its own pace, recent surges in demand and a huge increase in federal subsidies around the world have finally made this clean technology truly viable for the average person.

The second most common and popular method for generating your own electricity is through wind power energy. While it’s possible in an increasing number of cities and towns to switch your electricity over to wind power through your present provider, most people who are interested in generating their own electricity are interested in true energy independence. For those people, that means building or purchasing their own private wind turbine system.

The basics of a private wind turbine system are the same as a public system. You place an appropriately sized turbine on your property, which then feeds the electricity it generates either directly into your home’s grid, or into a battery which it charges.

Home wind turbines are generally less flexible than solar powered methods of energy generation. The reason for this is simple- a wind turbine requires considerably more space than solar panels which likely will attach to the roof of your house. Still, for those who have the space wind turbines provide a power and cost-effective method of generating their own energy. Unsurprisingly they are increasingly common and popular in rural regions, and in suburban neighborhoods whose code allows them.
